Joan of Arc/Jeanne D'Arc
Joan of Arc was the daughter of a farmer. At the age of 13, she began to hear voices from holy angels. She was told by St. Catherine and St. Margaret (the holy voices) to lead the french army against the English. After being told what to do, she went about gathering people together. However no one believes her, not only was she a girl, but she claims to hear voices from God to lead it. The people rejected her. And for the next 6 years, she tried to convince everyone that she should be leading the army. The people all thought that she was crazy, and Joan was losing her confidence. Then, the saints told her of a sword that she must find, in order to lead the army. They told her it was laying beneath a church, and to dig deep under and it will be there. Joan told the people and they thought she was just lying. They begun to dig under the church and laying in the dirt, was the predicted sword's whereabouts. Soon after, Joan had performed many other miracles, and soon the people were becoming convinced. She finally led the army in the battle against Britain. Joan led the French army at the age of 19.
She was illiterate, but makes it up for her stunning victory against the English. Joan had even regain the throne for the rightful king of the France, Charles VII. She had one year of triumph in 1429. Her last two years were years of betrayal and anguish. In 1430, Joan was captured in battle and was condemned. She was believed to be a witch by the English** and was living in jail. They told her that they will let her go if she admits that everything she has done was wrong, and were just made up. Joan agreed. Soon after, the saints told her it was wrong of her to had lied, but they will forgive her. Joan returned to the English and told them that the contract is over, and it is not true. Everything that she had done was real. On May 30th, 1431, she was tied to a stake and was burned alive. Her greatest fear was fire, and she had died in fear. One Englishman cried out, "We are lost. We have burned a saint." Then in 1920, nearly 500 years after her death, the Church had retracted its judgement of heresy and declared Joan as a saint.
**The English couldn't admit to themselves that Joan was indeed sent by God himself. Thus, they convinced themselves that she was a witch. After all, if you knew that God was on the side of your adversary, then that means you are the villian.
